Mr. Dawson's practice focuses on complex appeals. He has represented corporations and individuals in a variety of matters in federal and state courts throughout the United States. He has particular experience in appeals involving commercial disputes, white-collar criminal defense, constitutional questions, employment law, bankruptcy, and the First Amendment. Mr. Dawson has represented clients in a broad variety of industries, including energy, media, health care, construction, and shipping.
He graduated magna cum laude from the University of Texas School of Law School, where he served as Editor in Chief of the Texas Law Review, was the Clerk of the Chancellors, and was a member of the Order of the Coif. After graduation, he clerked for the Honorable Ed Carnes of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, and the Honorable Anthony M. Kennedy of the Supreme Court of the United States.
He is admitted to practice in Texas, and the United States Courts of Appeals for the Second, Fifth, Tenth, and Eleventh Circuits.
Representative matters:
● United States v. Wittig, No. 06-3166. Argued to Tenth Circuit and won appeal challenging 60-month sentence in white-collar-criminal case.
● United States v. Wittig, No. 06-3141. Prepared briefing for defendant in white-collar-criminal case that resulted in reversal by Tenth Circuit of 40-count conviction and 18 year sentence.
● State v. Medellin (pro bono). Prepared amicus brief to Texas Court of Criminal Appeals on behalf of States of Alabama, Montana, Nevada, and New Mexico, arguing that President lacked power to order Texas state courts to disregard procedural default rules.
● Rationis Enterprises, Inc. v. Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co., Ltd. Prepared briefs to Second Circuit that resulted in reversal of multimillion dollar verdict against shipbuilder in case arising out of shipwreck.
